Search Engine Marketing is the alchemy of the information age. Wizards turn magic formulas into instant sales. Everyone you meet knows something about it!

However here’s a practical view on the subject:

1. Know how Search Engine Marketing will work for you

Search Engine Marketing is the term used to describe the efforts you make to achieve high rankings in the search engines. However it is not the only form of marketing on the Internet and there are other ways that prospects can find you, such as Internet Directories, email campaigns, word of mouth, affiliate sales, advertisements and magazine articles.

2. Understand the process of Search Engine Marketing

These are the things you need to do.
  • Know which search engines where customers will search for the products you are selling.
  • Make sure your web site is featured in those search engines.
  • Understand and comply with the requirements of those search engines to make your site more prominent (known as Search Engine Optimisation).
3. Understand who the main search engines are.

There are over one thousand search engines. However most customers go looking in the following places and the players you should know fall into 2 groups.
  • Crawlers – for example: Google, MSN, AOL
      Crawlers are robot programs created by the search engine companies. They regularly visit your site and index your pages and follow the links. Google is the most popular.

  • Directories – for example: Yahoo, Open Directory Project
      Directories are large listings compiled by people. Search engines rate them highly so having an entry in directories can help to improve your site in the rankings. Yahoo is the most popular one.
4. Submitting your site to Search Engines

Submitting your site to the search engines is a way of quickly registering it with them. However you don’t have to, the search engines will find you if you wait.

5. Paying for the privilege

You can pay almost all of the search engines for a prominent listing. Paid placement or pay-per-click is a way of defining the key words and phrases that you believe prospects will search for and paying when someone clicks on your advert.

Google offers a service called Adwords where you bid for the keywords you want your listing to appear for. If you bid the highest, your name appears at the top.

6. Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the tuning of a web pages and site structure so that robot crawler program will calculate a good indexing and rank you higher for particular keywords and phrases. The most important crawler is Google. The first consideration should be to ensure that pages that need to be indexed can be reached by Google. SEO tuning experts can help with this.

There are three key ways for you to get a better ranking:
  • Make use of the Title Tag – include your chosen keywords
  • Use the keywords within the body of the page. The higher up the page and the more frequent the use will improve the ranking.
  • Get other sites to link to your site. The more popular the other site is, the better your ranking will be.
Bear in mind that the use of the Meta tags for keywords and description are no longer very important. Good honest well-written content which features your keywords and phrases regularly (without destroying the sense) is best.
